The men’s tennis team swept Prairie View A&M University 4-0, 4-0 during a double-feature matchup on Friday at the UTSA Tennis Center.
The Roadrunners (10-10) took the opportunity against the Panthers (2-24) to level out their record before heading into their final match of the regular season. Over the span of two matches, UTSA dominated in under two hours to rein in wins across all six courts. Freshman Ben Chetewy Ungar opened and closed for the men’s tennis team as he handed the Panthers losses in both singles and doubles during the twin bill.
“We came in knowing we were gonna win, so it was a race between us to see who was gonna finish first. But we have to be focused. [We] cannot waste time,” Chetewy Ungar said. “To make us motivated to win, it was a race. ‘Who is gonna finish first?’ We play to clinch, which means three guys don’t get to finish, so it was a race to finish the job first. Everyone wants a nice record after the season, a lot of wins.”
Game One:
UTSA set a dominant tone during the morning match, a dominance initially unveiled during doubles.
Freshmen Oskar Grzegorzewski and Chetewy Ungar — who have played as doubles partners in 13 matches — took the lead and swiftly closed out their match to win 6-2 in UTSA’s climb toward victory. Pairing up for the second time this season, seniors Miguel Alonso and Danijal Muminovic closed out their doubles with a 6-1 win on court three, securing UTSA’s first match point.
Grzegorzewski held fellow freshman Ethan Boswell to a near sweep, winning 6-0, 6-2 all while finishing first in singles. Alonso and Muminovic swapped scores and shut out the Panthers 6-0, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-0, respectively, to conclude singles play.
Game Two:
In their afternoon matchup, Grzegorzewski finished first in doubles, this time aided by junior Luke Cantu. The pair swept juniors — and twin brothers — Omari and Tafari Dudley 6-0. Alonso and freshman Santiago Flyckt then brought home UTSA’s second doubles victory of the day with a score of 6-2. The Roadrunners took longer to finish their afternoon doubles than in the morning match, but they made up for lost time with three singles sweeps.
Just as his team did in both matches, Flyckt successfully carried out a sweep against O. Dudley, beating the Panther 6-0, 6-0, to earn his first singles sweep of the season. No. 108 Tiago Torres topped junior Xavier Peter-Gooding in a dominant display. Switching from overhead returns and dropshots, Torres claimed a singles sweep for himself, winning 6-0, 6-0.
Although Chetewy Ungar left his morning singles match unfinished, he clinched UTSA’s fourth point with a 6-0, 6-0 gain to sweep the Panthers for a second time on Friday.
“It feels nice, always feels nice to clinch,” Chetewy Ungar said following his double-header. “The last two or three matches, especially the game against Rice, I feel that something in our team clicked. We’re working much better together. We play as a team better. We know how to pump each other up, which is very important. We feel good, and that’s the only thing that matters because the conference is coming, and we are ready.”
UTSA will close out their regular season with a match against Grand Canyon University at 12 p.m. Sunday at the UTSA Tennis Center.
