The UTSA Roadrunners (3-8) were defeated by the Georgia State Panthers (6-6) 99-68 on Sunday, Dec. 22 at the Convocation Center.

Georgia State’s R.J. Hunter had a game high 41 points hitting a Georgia State school record 12 three-pointers.

“It was a great game and a great team effort. Credit to my teammates for all my success,” Hunter said after the game.

Hunter scored 20 points in the first half leading Georgia State on a 16-0 run as the Panthers shot a scorching 53 percent.

UTSA shot 39.1 percent in the first half committing nine turnovers, to put them down 46-28 at halftime.

The Roadrunners struggled to score and create shots in the first half, as Georgia State outscored them 18-4 in the paint.

Georgia State continued their hot shooting in the second, stretching their lead to 31 on 58.3 percent shooting.

Hunter hit seven of his 12 three-pointers in the second half, to help the Panthers stretch their lead.

Hunter’s three-pointers were the most scored against UTSA by a player this season, and all time. Georgia State’s 19 three-pointers as a team was the most scored against UTSA this season.

“He hit some big ones. But we left him open a few times and it got him going,” said UTSA Head Coach Brooks Thompson after the game commenting on Hunter’s play. “You got to give him credit for hitting the tough ones.”

Despite being down by 31, the Roadrunners showed strong character to keep fighting and managed to cut the lead to 14 after going on multiple runs.

“These kids have great character; they do a great job on and off the floor,” said Thompson. “They’re never going to quit, and us coaches are never going to quit. We’re going to keep fighting.”

UTSA forward Jordan Sims had 11 of his game total 17 points in the second to help the Roadrunners push, but the lead proved too much for UTSA.

The Roadrunners improved on their shooting percentage and points in the paint in the second half, but it wasn’t enough against a red hot Georgia State team.

UTSA will have time to rest and bounce back over the Christmas break, with over a week off.

“It’ll be good for the guys to get away, regroup and refocus,” reflected Thompson after the game.

The Roadrunners take on Cameron on Tuesday, Dec. 31 at the Convocation Center at 2 p.m. to conclude their three-game home stand.
