Throughout March, the Women’s Studies Institute celebrates Women’s History Month by sponsoring and organizing events that highlight women’s social issues. On Tuesday, March 18, it will be co-sponsoring “The Vagina Monologues.”

“The Vagina Monologues” is a series of monologues from different women who address specific issues such as body image, sexuality, sexual assault and gender inequality. Each monologue showcases the speakers’ good and bad sexual encounters and how they view their bodies as a tool of empowerment and individuality.

The production was written by Eve Ensler in 1996 and since its creation a global movement called V-Day has commenced. The goal of this theatrical production is to make the public aware of the sexual harassment women deal with and to prevent women from experiencing violence.

This year, the production will help two non-profit organizations through its admission collection. In order to see the play, audience members will be required to donate goods, such as toiletries and new clothing. These donations will go to The Rape Crisis and Family Violence Prevention Services.

“The Vagina Monologues” will be performed on Tuesday, March 18 at 6 p.m. in the Art Building Recital Hall. For more information and the listings for other events, visit education.utsa.edu/womens-studies.
