Women’s tennis goes 2-1 on Vegas road trip

UTSA competed in a series of matches against Youngstown State (YSU), Florida Atlantic (FAU) and UNLV at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, Nev., this past weekend, Feb. 5-7.

In an impressive sweep, the Roadrunners defeated YSU 4-0 Friday afternoon. Securing the first victory in doubles, Aleksandra Zlatarova and Sophie Omoworare defeated opponents Tamara Teufl and Eliska Masarikova 6-4. Alexandra Weir and Catalina Cabrique experienced similar success, besting YSU’s Jessica Stanmore and Lucia Zagar 6-4.

Zlatarova won the opening match in singles play, coming out 6-2, 7-6. Weir swept her opponent 6-0 in the first set, then dropped the second set 4-6. Not one to be discouraged, in the third and final set, she picked up a 6-3 victory. Cabrique concluded the competition with YSU when she finished 6-4, 7-5 in a hard-fought match. 

On Saturday, the ‘Runners competed against FAU and fell 0-4. 

Jasmin Starr and Keegan McCain claimed the lone doubles victory for UTSA, finishing 6-2. FAU claimed the other doubles point in addition to three singles matches, bringing the competition to a close. 

“Tough match today; we had our chances. Overall, we fought hard and will have to learn from this tough loss,” Head Coach Ki Kroll said, summarizing his thoughts on the loss.

On Sunday, the ‘Runners faced their final competitor, UNLV. In a brilliant comeback, UTSA emerged victorious 4-1.

A combination of wins from Cabrique and Weir, 6-3 and Omoworare and Zlatarova, 6-4, in doubles gave UTSA an edge. In singles play, the matches were just as intense. UTSA took home three singles wins: Weir (6-1, 6-3), McCain (6-1, 6-3) and Zlatarova (6-2, 6-1).

Overall, this weekend’s results brought UTSA to 2-4 this season. 

The women’s tennis team will return to their home courts on Feb. 13-14, to compete against Northwestern State and the University of the Incarnate Word.
