Men’s tennis sweeps past UTRGV and NMSU

The UTSA men’s tennis team experienced a weekend of success, sweeping the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV)  7-0 and New Mexico State University (NMSU) 6-1 on Feb. 20 and Feb. 21, a positive turn in the circumstances after the Texas winter storm. 

On Saturday, the Roadrunners excelled in singles and doubles competitions. Sebastian Rodriguez beat his opponent Carlo Izurieta 6-3, 6-2. On the second court, Joao Ceolin fell 4-6 in his first set. However, he emerged 6-3 in a hard-fought second set. To determine the match outcome, Ceolin won a 10-8 super tiebreaker. Additional victories were also posted in singles by Juri Reckow, 6-3, 6-4, Javier Gonzalez, 6-2, 6-1, Slava Gulin, 6-4, 6-2, and Garrett Skelly, 6-0, 6-3. The doubles points were secured by Rodriguez and Ceolin, 6-2, Gonzalez and Skelly, 6-2. 

On Sunday, in the singles competition, Rodriguez fell 2-6, 2-6 to NMSU’s Louis Menard. On court two, Reckow beat Nicolas Buitrago in a close match. Battling 7-6 the first set, he fell 4-6, then came back 10-6 in the super tiebreaker. Ceolin, Gonzalez, Gulin, and Rodriguez achieved victories in singles as well: Ceolin, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, Gonzalez, 6-4, 6-1, Gulin, 7-5, 6-4, and Rodriguez, 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles, UTSA dominated all three matches. Doubles pair Rodriguez and Ceolin came out 6-2, Reckow and Gulin defeated Visser and Buitrago 7-6, and Gonzalez and Skelly finished 6-2.

UTSA head coach Sergey Avdeyev concluded, “It definitely felt good to play again, I’m proud of our guys bringing the level after not playing the entire week. We’ll get back on the court and get tuned up for next weekend.”

The men’s tennis team will continue their spring season on Feb. 27 and Feb. 28, facing University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) and Southern Methodist University (SMU).
