This week’s 28th annual BestFest will have events, food and drinks which will help raise funds for 69 student organizations culminates on Friday, Oct 31, between 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. under the Sombrilla Plaza. This year’s BestFest theme: “Tale of Terrors”.Events on Tuesday and Thursday will lead up to the four hours of food, drink and games on Halloween afternoon.
“Roadrunners Got Talent” will be held on Tuesday Oct. 28 with the winner performing on Friday at the Sombrilla. “We have eight people performing in the talent show Downtown, which starts at 7 p.m.,” Henry Barrera, BestFest chair and senior communications major said.
Thursday’s feature event will be “Blizzard of Bucks”; a booth with BestFest Bucks flying around in it with a certain amount of seconds to grab it. “Blizzard of Bucks” will be held in front of the Campus Activities Board office on the Paseo.
“It’s going to have filler money, they can use it either towards food or drink or whatever at the festival,” Barrera said.
Student organizations at BestFest will be selling a variety of food and drinks from funnel cakes to corn on the cob, and even a traditional Indian dessert, bhelpanibura; alongside drinks such as aguas frescas, lemonade, and kool-aid.
UTSA BestFest is typically the highest grossing fundraiser of the semester.
One of the student organizations, Public Relations Student Society of America(PRSSA) is donating15 percent of the funds they raise from BestFest will be donated to the Red Cross Hurricane Ike Disaster Relief Fund. They will be selling kettle corn under the Halloween theme: “Children of the Corn.”
Kari Meuth, president of PRSSA and senior in communications, said in a press release that the goal of the organization is to extend relief efforts to the rest of the San Antonio community.
PRSSA has also helped other non-profit organizations in San Antonio including Child Advocates of San Antonio (CASA), Med Center Rotary Club, and the Battle of Flowers Committee
“This is a great cause for an area that is still in need of our support. Our fellow Texans will continue to need support for months, perhaps years, to come,” Meuth said.
Besides donating 15 percent of their proceeds, PRSSA will also be accepting donations for the Red Cross Hurricane Ike Disaster Relief at their booth as well as at the Department of Communications MB 2.312.
