Politics is a cutthroat game that takes place in an arena without battle-axes or swords. However, the ruthless nature of this game is the primary reason I avoid politics as much as humanly possible. Nonetheless, as a registered voter, I have a civic duty to perform during elections. The next issue is to whom do I give my support? As a Republican, my prospects have been slim pickings. However, Senator Marco Rubio is a fine choice for the GOP 2016 candidacy.
As a Miami City Commissioner who worked his way up the Florida political ladder, Senator Rubio has constantly been a champion of limited government. As this is something America was founded under and prospered on it only makes sense to return the country to that foundation. More specifically, less government intrusion into people’s lives as well as the private sector has had positive effects on the economy such as job growth and lower taxes. Taking those conservative values to Washington, Senator Rubio believes that one of the best ways to promote job growth is by indefinitely extending the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, which significantly lowered tax rates for millions of tax payers. On top of that, he would push to reform the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) and repeal the federal estate tax. Rubio’s focus on these two particular issues is crucial due to AMT’s capacity for abuse, it being a measure that ensures wealthier Americans don’t receive too many tax incentives. Additionally, the federal estate tax syphons money from private citizens who are attempting to sell real-estate of any kind.
Furthermore, one of Senator Rubio’s primary concerns once in office would be to repeal and replace ObamaCare. Health care is an important issue for many Americans. While President Obama’s plan sounds nice, it’s just not what was promised. ObamaCare is a very murky plan that arguably none of its supports even understood. It’s design leads to many insurance companies going out of business, and is particularly problematic due to one of its tenants being, “you can keep your plan and doctor if you like them. Period.” This is because millions of Americans had health insurance through their employers and it was not long before many if not all of them were informed that their coverage would soon be cancelled in accordance with the “new government plan.”
I’m a firm believer in the American Dream. Even though the country and its economy have evolved, the American Dream is still as relevant now as it was then, perhaps even more. There are people in this country who believe that the American Dream is just a myth. They believe that it’s a bait-n-switch falsehood that isn’t actually within reach. Senator Rubio’s family history proves otherwise; his parents risked their lives coming to this country from Cuba and worked extremely hard to build a future for their son.
Sometimes a lot of failures come before success, but that doesn’t mean one should give up. The former image of the American Dream was “a car in every garage and a chicken in every pot,” but the idea behind it has never changed. The American Dream is about anyone having the capacity to be happy and to forge their own destiny. It’s about being able to create, expand and help your neighbor without being penalized for it. That’s the idea driving Marco Rubio, and that’s the reason why he is the best 2016 candidate for the Republican Party.
