Should the Spurs go after Chris Paul

With the Phoenix Suns waiving veteran point guard Chris Paul, the former all-star will now test his luck in NBA free agency this offseason.

Coming off of the 2023 NBA season averaging 13.9 points, four rebounds and eight assists, it is clear that Paul is not the same all-NBA guard he once was in seasons prior. Though undoubtedly a future Hall of Famer, the “Point God” now finds himself playing the role of a mentor rather than a star player.

While Paul’s on-court production has taken a dive, it is his leadership and mentor capabilities that drive up his stock in free agency.

Young teams such as the Rockets, Hornets and Spurs have all expressed interest in the veteran for this very reason. While there are numerous teams that are hoping to acquire Paul, few – if any – make as much sense as the San Antonio Spurs.

Drafting with the top selection in the 2023 NBA Draft, the Spurs find themselves with a plethora of young talent. Whether it be forward Keldon Johnson, guard Devin Vassell or soon-to-be the No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama, the future of the franchise is certainly a bright one. While some would claim that the addition of Paul could stunt the Spurs player’s development, his veteran knowledge and leadership capability would do just the opposite.

As a proven veteran and leader, Paul could serve as both a player and coach for the young San Antonio squad. His hardworking mentality and commitment to professionalism would make him a prime role model for young players to follow. The 6-foot guard would not only lead the team but also help develop players to reach their full potential.

With stints in both Oklahoma City as well as Phoenix, Paul has proven to be a player who can bring the most out of his teammates. Many believe that Paul’s former teammates Devin Booker and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander would not be the All-Stars they are today without the help of the savvy veteran. Time and time again, the future Hall of Famer has proven that he can lead a team while also elevating those around him.

A free agent such as Paul is just what the Spurs need heading into next season. While they will certainly make a jump in wins, it is important that young players develop and grow to reach their full potential. By adding the veteran guard, the Spurs find themselves doing just that.
