In need of new explosive songs to soundtrack your daily activities? Look no further because today is your lucky day. After two long years, Machine Girl has cooked up three new tracks for the upcoming release of the science fiction manga, “Freq,” written by Dai Sato, who has worked on notable anime like Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo.
Experimental duo Machine Girl, consisting of DJ, vocalist and producer Matthew Stephenson and drummer Sean Kelly, have previously toured with other duos like 100 Gecs and The Garden. If you have not attended one of their shows, be prepared. Their live performances are known for being loud, eruptive and interactive. Stephenson consistently tries to jump into the crowd at least once throughout their set, often climbing up pillars or balconies to scream at concertgoers. However, certain venues, like our Aztec Theater, have not been a personal favorite. When asked about their experience, they simply responded, “The staff was cool, playing that room sucked.”
Chaotic and loud are certainly descriptors for this duo, but Machine Girl brings variety to the table. Notably, their most recent double album release was made to soundtrack the video game “Neon White.” Some even boast that one would not exist without the other. Other works, like the “RePorpoised Phantasies” EP, sound like an underwater dance party.
“Black Glass” opens up the EP by immediately entrancing the listener with its synth sequence, and current fans may recognize certain details in “Dance in the Fire,” where the laughter sample used in “This is Your Face on Dogs” is recycled. Silly lyrics like “I’m lost in the sauce” are to be expected, of course, while “What’s your status?” seems like a nod to their track “Status” from the same album “The Ugly Art.”
Whether these songs are blasted in headphones while scrambling to submit an assignment before 11:59 p.m., or simply used to dance around your room, “SUPER FREQ” will not disappoint you.
