The UTexas Health San Antonio, an outpatient and surgery center, is located near the southwest corner of Loop 1604 and Kyle Seale Parkway on UTSA Park West Campus.
It is the largest academic research institution in South Texas. With an annual research portfolio of more than $413 million, it is in the top 3% of organizations that receive funding from the National Institutes of Health.
Starting on Feb. 1 Taylor Eighmy, PhD, will begin as the acting President for the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio. He was appointed by Chancellor James B. Milliken, which was announced on Jan 23.
Currently, Eighmy serves as president of UTSA. The UT System Board of Regents previously announced that Eighmy will become the first president of the new integrated UTSA and UT Health awaiting a successful review by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges in the summer.
The full operational integration is expected to take up to three years due to the broad academic medicine, healthcare and clinical enterprise, also including its financial and operational functions.
Going forward, Eighmy’s initial focus as UT Health San Antonio’s president will be to develop a method of a single comprehensive leadership cabinet structure. To help push more momentum for the merger and integration, where he will oversee the creation of a strategic plan to support a seamless transition.
Until the complete merge of the two, Eighmy’s main focus will be ensuring that the new institution will continue to build on excellence for its legacy institutions while establishing itself as the third largest university in Texas.
