The internet can provide a sense of release. For example, the “Devious Licks” meme was not exactly moral, but it was a breath of fresh air — a collective burst of energy in a world that often feels suffocating. People needed to act out, laugh and stop taking everything so seriously. That was the point. The trend surfaced in the months after COVID-19 lockdowns, when people were desperate for reconnection.
The world is undeniably serious right now. Wars, human rights violations, climate disasters and rent crises have taken center stage. Individuals fight their battles and take their stands. Once the dust settles, people need somewhere to breathe. Memes were one of the few spaces offering that release — functioning as the internet’s pressure valve. Without them, energy builds, and when it finally releases, it manifests as anger, negativity or burnout.
The timeline of today’s humor mirrors the pace of aging. Memes once lingered, grew and evolved. Today, they fade quickly, like trends in fashion or slang. The internet has no patience for repetition. What was once iconic becomes “overused” within a week. Even nostalgia feels rushed, in film reboots and remakes, video game remasters released too soon, revived TV series and saturated music sampling.
Generation Z is growing up in a time of constant upheaval — through pandemics, protests, global conflicts and wars. Though experienced through every generation, what distinguishes Gen Z is how social media has turned attention into a fast-spinning wheel, constantly shifting from one event or trend to the next. This environment amplifies awareness and anxiety, creating a sense of urgency in how youth consume and react to information. Gen Z is shaped by volatility, raised to stay aware, cautious and measured in every word. Humor now arrives with disclaimers. Yet, in perilous times, laughter is not a luxury; it is survival.
Many people cannot joke freely because their daily realities leave no room for humor. The world’s harshness makes laughter even more sacred. In today’s world, some debates, like outrage over a meme or a minor joke, are trivial compared to people experiencing war, poverty or disease. Being able to worry about small issues is a privilege, exemplifying that humor, even in the form of fleeting memes, remains a vital way of coping with life’s hardships. The jokes shared in the midst of danger are not careless or signs of indifference, but of endurance, making it so laughter lives where the fear resides.
The courage to laugh is not passivity. Play is not ignorance. Both are forms of resistance. Memes, no matter how trivial or fleeting, remind society that the world could still be funny, even when it is not fair. It is essential to remember that laughter and awareness can coexist. Maturity does not mean abandoning humor; it means recognizing that laughter is what keeps people sane.

Wonderful reminder that humor and laughter can be one of our best coping tools. So never leave home without your sense of humor.
