UTSA football added 17 players to its 2026 roster on National Signing Day but were forced to wait an extra day before landing its largest commitment this fall. San Bernardino JC defensive back Asaad Chapman — a four-star recruit and No.3 Junior College cornerback in the nation — joined his brother Ahamad Chapman, announcing on X he would sign with the Roadrunners.
In 2025, Asaad Chapman had 42 total tackles, three interceptions and two defensive touchdowns for San Bernardino. The four-star prospect’s final five schools came down to UTSA, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Oregon, Florida State University and Mississippi State University. Choosing UTSA over Power Four schools might confuse fans around the nation, but for Asaad Chapman, the chance to play with his brother is what mattered the most to him.
“My brother being there and the coaches showed a lot of love,” he told 247Sports. “My brother likes it up there a lot. All the other schools were good but UTSA was the smoothest. I could see the vision there. The coaches were great when I’ve been there and they have a good community. I can compete for everything and it’s a good situation.”
Asaad Chapman joins Copiah-Lincoln Community College linebacker Archie Chambers as the second top-rated defensive JUCO recruit to join the ‘Runners this cycle, with Chambers checking in as the No.1 JUCO linebacker in the nation. On the offensive side, UTSA football also added Cael Meisman, the No.6 JUCO wide receiver in the nation.
UTSA has had success plucking players from the JUCO ranks in recent seasons. Senior running back Robert Henry Jr. came to San Antonio after winning the Walter Jones Award in 2022 at Jones College. Former defensive back Zah Frazier spent one year at Coffeyville CC before joining the Roadrunners in 2022 and eventually being selected 169th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears.
Head coach Jeff Traylor has had success both finding and retaining JUCO talent throughout his tenure with the Roadrunners, a key reason why UTSA serves as an attractive destination for those players.
