Republican Sen. Ted Cruz was recently spotted on a flight to Laguna Beach, California, only days before a severe storm was set to hit Texas, affecting nearly 150 million people. Following his abandonment of Texans to Cancun, Mexico during the 2021 freeze, many angry people took to X posting, “Here we go again…”
Cruz returned on Friday, posting a picture of himself on social media and downplaying the outrage.,
“But I am reliably informed by Twitter that if I simply raise up my hand on Texas soil, the storm will turn around & sunshine, rainbows & unicorns will emerge,” Cruz stated in his post.
His actions and his mocking of Texans’ criticism is a testament to his complete and utter lack of accountability to the people who elected him for representation.
In 2021, Texas were devastated by a record-breaking winter storm. According to the National Centers for Environmental Information, it was the coldest winter storm since 1989 and broke records for the longest streak of freezing weather. During this inclement storm, millions of people were without power or water, unable to cook food or keep warm. As a result, 246 Texans died during this storm, during which Cruz fled the state.
Upon returning, he showed remorse for his actions, but remorse does not help those who were left cold and without electricity nor those who lost their lives during the worst storm in Texas history. Cruz has long been an advocate for the deregulation of the power grid, leading to this horrific and preventable loss of power that left many Texans desperate for warmth.
Now, in 2026, Texas is facing another freeze, and thousands of Texans are still without power. After being spotted on his plane to Laguna Beach, California, and facing backlash online, a spokesperson for Cruz issued a statement, saying the senator was traveling for a work trip and that Cruz would return before the storm hit. Despite this, Cruz still felt the need to make a childish statement on social media.
Cruz does not seem to mind mocking his constituents and ignoring criticism. He should not be reveling in the fact that the residents he was elected to protect do not trust him, and he certainly should not be ignoring the gravity of the situation given the tragic outcome of the 2021 storm.
His condescending comment on X addressing his voters, who he is supposed to represent, is appalling. People are afraid. People died. This is not something to be laughed about; Texans should not stand for it.
