Bexar County’s elections department has processed a backlog of more than 7,000 voter registrations as of Jan. 27, in preparation for the March primary.
The county stated all registrations have been processed three weeks early, before the primary begins. This comes after the county previously worked through a larger backlog under a shorter deadline during the Nov. 2025 election, with more than 70,000 registrations at its peak and two weeks remaining until early voting.
The fall election’s backlog accumulated after the previous registration processing software, Votec, shut down over the summer. This shutdown prompted the county to switch to a new system, the Texas Election Administration Management system. The software transition resulted in delays and technical difficulties.
Although county commissioners plan to adopt a new system, it will not be ready in time for the primary. As a result, TEAM will continue to be used, despite experiencing issues with efficiency. Similar to last year’s election, temporary staff were hired to accelerate processing.
“With additional staff brought on, putting in long and hard hours of work, [they] were able to eliminate the recent backlog well in time for the start of early voting,” Bexar County Elections Administrator Michele Carew said.
Early voting for the primary will run from Feb. 17-27. The ballots include races for U.S. Senate, governor, U.S. House seats, local county offices and party propositions.
Voters can check their registration status at VoteTexas.gov and contact their local registrar for questions regarding their registration.
