The Avex Ensemble visited San Antonio on Jan. 30 to perform the soundtrack of “Blade Runner” while the film played concurrently at the Majestic Theatre. Together, the group brought the 44-year-old film to life in an unforgettable manner. With the conductor playing a synthesizer along with his musicians, there lay a deep sense of passion and admiration for what the players were giving to the audience.
With “Blade Runner,” Vangelis, born Evangelos Odysséas Papathanassiou, composed a score that was ahead of its time in terms of how it elevated the film it was accompanying and in its blending of musical genres. Part of what made seeing the score performed live so captivating was the well-blended orchestral and electronic elements, often being so accurate the difference was hard to notice.
It managed to perfectly imitate the sound of the noirs that inspired the film while also creating a futuristic sound so beautiful it transported listeners to a cybernetic world. What made the performance even better was how well integrated the soundtrack was to the movie. Even when the score was performed in front of an audience, it became hard to tell movie sound effects from the musicians’ work. There were also segments where one of the musicians would stand up and vocalize to convey the surreal environment of “Blade Runner,” particularly with how it shows a Los Angeles filled with many cultures overflowing its streets.
“Blade Runner” live gives a great perspective for both individuals who have not seen it as well as those who have seen it multiple times. For those who have not seen the film, it makes it easier to get the sense of scale that the film is going for. “Blade Runner” contains large rooms and towering buildings, so the music conveys that by applying reverb to match what it would sound like in those environments. In a theater, reverb is created naturally by the size of the auditorium, so when the movie opens with a loud bang from a drum, the audience not only hears it, but they feel it as well.
The performance brilliantly managed to convey the emotions the characters of “Blade Runner” are feeling to a point where the music becomes a form of dialogue, speaking for the characters even in moments when they are not saying anything at all.
“Blade Runner” is an amazing movie made stronger by what is possibly one of the greatest scores composed for a film. It is nothing short of awesome that the Avex ensemble will continue to bring the beautiful sounds of Vangelis’ genius to more cities in the U.S. To see where the ensemble will go next, visit avexclassicsinternational.co.uk/performances.
