The Student Government Association broke their biweekly meeting schedule and held a meeting on March 27 after holding their fourth meeting of the semester. Discussed at the meeting were plans to improve accessibility on campus, upcoming events, student government elections and goals for the upcoming semester.
Improving student accessibility — such as preventing nonstudent use of handicapped parking and testing the weight of doors on campus to see which warrant buttons for opening them — were some ideas raised by the SGA. A formal request has been submitted to student housing regarding the doors, but no report has been received by SGA.
Business Affairs Senator Ryan Endsley stated that artificial intelligence generated The Den’s mural, which has been taken down.
“Right now, they are still trying to find an artist,” Endsley said. “I will be waiting until the next dining committee session to see if they have found anyone. And if not, we will try to make a Student Government initiative to try to make our own outreach with local artists and our students.”
The removal of the AI generated mural is likely due to student pushback earlier in the semester. The removal may open new opportunities for local artists should campus administration follow through with its plans to have a new mural painted.
SGA also discussed plans for the next class of student senators and committee chairs. Applications for the executive cabinet are open until April 9 and can be filed via RowdyLink. Campus wide elections are being held April 20-23. Committee chair interviews have also concluded, and the new chairs will be sworn in at the next general assembly on April 9.
Several upcoming events were also announced at the meeting, including a My Sister’s Keeper’s Self-Care Bingo on March 31, Dia en la Sombrilla on April 17 and an Earth Day festival on April 22. The SGA also requested volunteers to assist with Dia en la Sombrilla from 7-11:45 a.m. Students can reach out to SGA via their student government student feedback form or email [email protected].
Information about upcoming events can be found on SGA’s Instagram page @utsa_sga and RowdyLink. The next general assembly will be held on April 9 at 5 p.m. in room 2.202 of the H-E-B Student Union.
