September 29, 2008
Right out of the gates, UTSA dominated UT-Arlington in its first match of the weekend Friday, taking the first two sets, 25-10 and 25-22.
The Mavericks rebounded in the third match taking a win 30-28.
But the Runners were able to seal things up in the final match 25-17.
With the win over the Mavericks, UTSA extended their winning streak to six.
The Roadrunners (8-6) increased their winning streak to seven Saturday afternoon as they took on rival Texas State, defeating them in four sets, 3-1.
Freshman Amber Brooks and Kelsey Jewasko set the tone as Brooks had a total of 44 assists while Jewasko turned out a career high 27 digs in the victory.
The Runners took the first set, 25-17. But the Runners were only able to keep things close in the second set.
Outside hitter Kendra Rowland with four kills tied it up at 9-9, but the Bobcats weren’t fazed, as they went on a 4-0 run separating themselves from the Runners.
After a timeout taken by UTSA, Brooks came out with two, incredible saves as Valorie Rogers kill made the contest 24-22 Bobcats.
But the late run by the Runners fell short as Texas State went on to win the second set 25-23.
Runners’ Head Coach Laura Groff took several timeouts in the third set trying to get her team back on track.
Late in the third with the score 23-22, the Bobcats found a way to tie it up at 23, but after Groff’s final timeout the Runners took the set 25-23.
UTSA continued their momentum despite a rough collision between Brooks and Jewasko, winning the fourth and final set 25-20.
Rowland added 17 kills and 10 digs to the Runners’ victory. Jewasko was named Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
“[For Prairie View] we must continue our same routine, practice, team time and just staying together,” said Brooks.
UTSA continues conference play as they take on Prairie View A&M Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
